Complications Of Nail Fungus

Nail fungus is not only a concern for cosmetic reasons or for the localized pain it may cause. There are other complications that can occur for vulnerable populations.

The prescence of nail infection can be a cause for concern for people that have compromised immune systems, or  those that have diabetes.

Immunospressed patients whether from debilitating disease or from the administration of immunosupressant drugs are at risk from  fungal infections. Care must always be taken with these patients

For diabetic patients poor blood sugar control can leave them to susceptible to infections and injuries to their feet, injuries that do not always easily heal. For these patients toe nail fungus can weaken the neighbouring skin and increase the risk of injury. The presence of nail fungus increases the burden on health care workers for whom protection of the feet is one of hallmarks of diabetic care.

Therefore if you fall into these categories it is advisable that you see your doctor and alert them if you suspect that you may have nail fungus. This allows for the recognition of a need for greater vigilance in delivering medical care.
