Can You Catch Nail Fungus From Nail Salons

Fake nails are very much in fashion these days. It's not hard to understand why. Why not avoid the time and work it takes to grow out your nails and then to have them pedicured to the most fashionable shape and style. Why not just have the fake nails, already the perfect length and shape.

While there is nothing wrong with fashion there is some concern about the possiblity of getting nail fungus while visiting a spa. Nail fungus is a very common condition that may effect as many as 35 million Americans.

Since the infection is transmissable through contact with nails of people that already have the infection some care should be taken when visiting these shops to ensure that contact between nails does not occur. Try to visit a reputable salon and watch to see if the instruments are properly sterlized.

You may wonder why nail fungus is most commonly seen on the toes. This has to do with the nature of the fungus and the environment it most prefers to inhabit. Most of us spend the large part of the day with our feet in the covered dark environment of footwear.

This dark, moist, airless environment is the ideal environment for the the fungus to thrive. The nails on our hands are open and exposed to air and this prevents the fungus from growing.

Sometimes the nail fungus that is on our hands is helped by our instinct to want to cover up the unsightliness.

If you already have nail fungus the natural impulse may be to want to cover up your nails with fake nails. While this may be the normal instinct it is not advised. Nail fungus thrives in a dark covered, airless environment so applying a fake nail may just exaceberate the problem. The covered nail then may see a faster spread of the fungus and consequently a greater unsightliness of the nail.

Sadly many women may be unknowingly promoting the spread of nail fungus on their hands by applying fake nails to cover up.

Recently in an 11 Alive news story a woman in Atlanta reported of developing a serious infection from visitng a nail salon.

Renata Brown claims an injury at a nail salon left her requiring treatment for an infection that billed over two thousand dollars in medical bills.

The nail salon was cleared of blame but desptie this Dr. Allen Raphael with Village Podiatry Centers is reported on the story to have seen many infection in his patients that arose from visits from nail salons.

Dr Raphael recommends taking your instruments to the salon so that you can be sure that they have been properly cleaned.
